Mindset Matters: Getting Inside the Head of Top Dollar Coaches
Once upon a time, I moved to a new city by myself and started directing HUGE variety shows. Think Vegas x 100 with a cast of 800 and a live Jazz band. Literally staged inside a stadium. I was barely out of grad-school, (after graduating college at age 21) and I was in charge of every aspect. Every day, I would reset my boss-director hat and go to work. Each night, I would call my mom, crying and telling her I wanted to come home.
She told me to suck it up, put my big girl pants on and get a new attitude. So I did. I went on to have a successful run for 5 years with record ticket sales and all-time high audience satisfaction. I even repaired some relationship-fences with vendors, workers, musicians and tech people. My predecessors had been rather mean and unbending. After I shifted my mind, it was easy to grab allys, form relationships, do favors and accept help in return.
That whole shift was TOUGH for me. The only thing I changed after my desperate phone calls was my mind. (BTW it still irritates me that she was right!) I still had the same doubts, the same issues and the same hard work. But I stopped thinking negatively and started seeing potential.
What if I could pull something out my predecessors hadn't been able to? And I was YOUNGER than all of them put together. I looked at it as a goal.
I would do it better. I would do it faster. And I wouldn't make enemies along the way.
What's the deal with that story and why should you care?
Because your mindset will make or break your business. Period.
All the big business coaches, like Tony Robbins and Marie Forleo, wanted to quit.
Media mavens like Oprah were told they could never make it in TV.
George Lucas once pitched his crazy Sci-Fi flick to every movie studios who told him “no one goes to see Sci-Fi movies!”
In the late 1970s, an Irish Band called U2 was trying to get a recording contract, they went through dozens of record labels. They got rejection after rejection.
Maybe they called their mom.
Maybe they got told off like me, and their moms' told them they weren't quitters.
Tony Robbins now owns a private island in the South Pacific. He gets a million hits a day on his website. But, in 1992, he was overweight, depressed, and living on a friend’s couch.
Then, he shifted. His mindset changed. Yes, he's got charisma, experience and expertise. But it's not why he became successful.
If Tony Robbins can do it, you can, too. You have everything you need to catapult you to the next level.
High-end coaches know; to reach the heights you must first believe you can reach the heights! It's time to put our big people pants on and kick our business into high-gear.

Your mindset determins your success. Your coaching plans are no different. Without the right mindset, you will forever be attracting and working with clients who can't pay you, no matter how deserving and lovely they are. They can't and they won't pay you because they don't see how money motivates us. More on that later.
Before you can realize your dreams of 5 and 6 figure clients, you must change your brain.
The top earners in your industry have a mindset of success. And you've got to get in line with that mindset, or you'll be stuck in the 90% of businesses who fail.
Changing Your Attitude
One thing charismatic and personable people have in common is a good attitude. Think about it; Carrie Wilkerson or Paul Evans don't complain about sick kids or flat tires or the flu.
Instead, you see their expressions of gratitude in everything. If the kids are sick, they’re grateful to have a business that allows them to stay home and play nurse. If the cable guy is late, they’re grateful for 40 extra minutes to read a book instead of watch television. And if the car died in the middle of running a week’s worth of errands, they’re happy with a reasonably priced mechanic.
Imma gonna say it, stop complaining. Reframe every thought into a positive and turn your attitude around.
A few weeks ago, I was supposed to launch a new product but I got shingles. In my face. In my eye. I almost went blind.
I gotta tell you, I cried a lot. I couldn't launch but I made sure to set a new date. I knew it was temporary. My son would ask what my plans were and I would cheerily say "shingles activities!"
Believe me, it wasn't fun. But those convos with my mom came into my head. Stop crying and get to work. There's always something to be grateful for, even in the worst situations. Rethink. Revise your attitude. You'l be happier, healthier and attract a better audience.
Really, do you want clients who work or complain? Be what you wish to attract.
Grow Your Confidence
Here’s something else top-end coaches have in common: confidence. They believe in what they do. They believe in their ability to help others achieve the same thing. They walk on stage or join a webinar knowing; what they are about to say will profoundly change lives.
It’s not cocky or arrogant, it’s just confidence. If you don't have it, here's what to do.
Ask yourself... “What’s the worst that could happen?” Of those worst-case scenarios, resolve what you have control over, and let the rest go. So if you’ve agreed to speak in front of a small group of business owners, and your fear is that you’ll flub your speech, practice so it's completely automatic.
Next, get inside the head of someone who is confident in what you’re about to do. Walk onto that stage as if you’ve been doing it for years, and not only will you feel more confident, but you’ll be more confident.
You can use the “as if” attitude in everything from creating a new product to closing a sale. Whenever you feel your confidence failing, just remember to act as if you’ve done this successfully hundreds of times. (Because you've seen yourself do it thousands of times in your own head!)
Your potential clients sense your mindset. And if it’s not up to the standards of the top earners in your niche, you’ll always struggle to make the sale.
